Winter is coming…
Ah, who are we kidding? Winter is well and truly here. The temperature’s dropped, the weather has a real bite to it and you want to make sure that you strike the balance between style and comfort when it comes to your modest wear.
That’s what we’re going to help you with here.
These are the tips that will help you to pull off the modest look during the winter.
Tip #1 – Layer Up
The great news about modest fashion is that it generally lends itself pretty well to layers. For example, you can wear a pair of leggings or even jeans under a Maxi Dress to create a stylish look.
More importantly, you’ll be keeping yourself warm while you do it.
The key here is that you don’t underestimate the sheer coldness of the weather. And as importantly, you don’t overestimate just how much protection a piece of modest clothing will offer.
Take an Abaya for example. It covers pretty much your whole body from the neck down, which would lead to you thinking you don’t need to wear anything else for the cold weather. However, an Abaya made using thin or breathable materials will let a little too much cold air in.
In this scenario, the Abaya is just one of several layers that you need to wear to bat away the cold.
Tip #2 – Heavier Skirts Are Important
If you’re determined to stick with a skirt, you’ve got to consider the sudden changes in weather than winter can bring.
A sharp gust of wind can easily catch a skirt and lift it up. That means you end up revealing things that you don’t want anybody to see.
Light and breezy is not the way to go with your skirt selection during the winter. Ideally, any skirts or dresses you wear will be made from a heavier material that can withstand windy weather.
Unfortunately, there are times when the wind will be so strong that a skirt is completely out of the question. When that happens, we’d say revert to jeans, trousers, or something similar until the weather’s a little more favourable.
Tip #3 – Boots are a Girl’s Best Friend
Boots are generally a great choice in modest fashion because they’re great for covering your legs when needed. They can even give you the option of wearing slightly shorter skirts, especially if your boots cover your calves.
But when winter comes around, boots will become your best friend.
This is where you’re combining style with practicality. A pair of suitable boots look great with a Maxi Dress or an Abaya. However, they’re also going to offer extra protection against the elements.
Think about it like this.
You’re walking along without a care in the world. Suddenly, you step on a patch of black ice and start to slip.
Now, what would you prefer to be wearing?
A pair of trainers that slip easily and offer no protection to your ankles? Or, a pair of boots that provide support and may prevent unwanted twists and slips?
It’s going to be the boots, of course. Make sure you have a few pairs available for when the weather really takes a cold turn.
Tip #4 – Scarves Look Great With a Dress (And Keep You Warm Too)
Now, there are many among you who will wear a hijab with your modest outfits. This tip doesn’t necessarily apply to you as your hijab will do more than enough to keep your head and neck warm when the winter sets in.
Instead, this tip is geared more towards people who want to dress modestly without wearing more traditional forms of modest wear.
Of course, a scarf is a great choice for a winter ensemble. After all, it’s specifically designed as a winter garment.
The key here is to make sure that the scarf goes well with the Abaya or Kimono that you choose to wear. Your goal here is to find a balance between comfort and class. A heavy woollen scarf may feel amazing during the winter. But if you’re wearing it with an Abaya, you may create a big clash that doesn’t quite look right.
We recommend wearing a jacket over your dress if you’re going to wear a scarf. This means you can zip the jacket up and stuff the scarf inside for the slightly more refined look.
Tip #5 – Cinch up a Long Coat
Longer coats provide you with a bunch of options when it comes to modest fashion ensembles.
For example, you may be able to use a belt to cinch up a long coat. This tighter mid-section practically turns the coat into a long dress. However, you get the added benefit of wearing a winter material that’s going to keep you warm.
If you’re going down this route, we wouldn’t recommend wearing another dress under the long coat. Instead, go for trousers or leggings with a long-sleeved top.
After all, the coat itself serves the same function as a dress would in this situation.
Tip #6 – Prioritise Comfort When it Gets Really Cold
Sometimes, style is just going to have to go out of the window. If you need to step into crazily cold weather, don’t make any concessions for style. Comfort and warmth are your priorities, regardless of what anybody might think of your ensemble.
The point we’re making here is that you should put yourself in danger for the sake of fashion.
Modest clothing lends itself really well to creating stylish winter looks. But there are times when you just need to ignore your desire to look the part and just wear something that protects you against the weather.
